Frostbite #4

Well I have some good news bad news concerning the Frostbite Series. On the bad side of the ledger we have not had the first race, no wind on any of the three scheduled races. Had plenty of wind scheduled for the weekend during the week, but no wind for the race. On the positive side of the ledger we have an extremely tight leader board going into the the 4th race of the Frostbite series, everyone is tied for first place. We do have wind in the forecast for Saturday, but based on the last three attempted races, that does mean much come race day. So mark your calender for this Saturday, we are going to try to have only one person in first place by the end of the day. We will have a race rules discussion at 12 with the race at 1. Thanks Greg

OSYC Work Day, January 24

OSYC Members: We have a work day scheduled for this coming Saturday, January 24, 2009. We will start about 9 and finish by noon. The weather forecast looks good for the afternoon so plan for an afternoon sail. Arlene Mueller has volunteered to prepare the traditional lunch of dogs and beans or whatever she decides. We plan to start re-decking and repairing of Dock B. Bring your carpentry tools including battery powered drill/drivers. We will start on one or more of the finger piers and try to stabilize them somewhat so the don’t sway so much. Probably we will not get more than a couple of these done on Saturday. On subsequent workdays we will finish the finger piers and install water and electricity stations similar to those on Dock A and then re-deck the main walkway. After we get started and figure out exactly how to do the job, we retired folks will probably have a few weekday workdays to try to finish up the job before spring. Of course we would welcome any not retired individuals to participate. Also on Saturday we will also need to do the routine maintenance so bring gas powered yard blower, carpentry, maintenance, and yard tools which you think we may need for the following tasks. Pick out something on the list and have at it.

Saturday’s Race Changed to Sunday

Saturday’s forecast is now calling for winds to be 3 mph………..not exactly ideal racing weather. If you fast forward to Sunday, winds are schedule to be 13-15 mph with gusts to 22. So we have changed the day to Sunday for this leg of the Long Distance Series. Skippers meeting will be at 12 on Sunday. Hope you can make it.

Long Distance #2

Mark your calendar’s for Saturday December 6, that is the next long distance race. The early morning temperature for the last distance race was 20 degrees. The forecast temperature for Saturday, is in the upper 30s, with the temperature in the upper 50’s for the race, almost balmy conditions. Last race we had winds of 1-3 mph, this Saturday’s forecast is for 8 mph. Compared to last race we will be racing in a tropical storm. So we have the temperature scheduled to be in the 50’s, with more than twice the amount of wind forecast for this race. Since we had 5 boats racing in the first race under less than ideal conditions, we should have twice the number of boats racing this weekend……..Do you like my logic? The race format will be another long distance race, with more details to follow on Thursday of this week. Gop

Winter Distance Series

Next Saturday on November 22, we are having a long distance race. This will be the first of three for this series. The first one will be from the club around Goat Island and back, we will call this one the {{Goat Island Challenge}}. The next one will be from the club to Crooked Creek and back, we will call this the {{Crooked Creek Run}}. The final race will be from the club to Oconee Springs and back, we will call this one the {{Oconee Springs Crawl}}. If they are letting water out of the dam and you are going against the current and you do not have much wind, this could be a really long race or a “Crawl” Trophies for this series will be awarded at the Spring meeting. As an added bonus you will earn points for next year’s “Cruiser’s Quest” for each of these races. So mark your calendar for the race this Saturday, we will be looking at the forecast to determine the if all systems are go and will give you the final details on Thursday. Gop

November Foliage Cruise 15-16 November 2009

The front had finally passed by and by 9AM the rain had stopped. We knew there would be wind but it was just getting started. By the time most of the members had their boats ready to sail it was after …. Cruise to Crooked Creek

There is a cruise being organized to sail from OSYC on the 15th of November up to Crooked Creek Restaurant & Marina. We plan to depart OSYC on Saturday, 15 November, at 9AM or after. We will anchor and/or tie up to the Crooked Creek Marina docks to have dinner at the Restaurant. (Please do not use the fuel dock) After dinner we will split up to anchor or stay at the dock for the night, whatever you choose. Drag your dinghy or whatever if you think you would want to anchor and dinghy in. We will sail back the following day to OSYC. With good wind we may be stopping for lunch at Goat Island or Airport Island if we are ahead of schedule on either day. Have you found the Goat Island Cache or the Airport Island Caches yet? This cruise will count on everyone”s 2009 Cruiser Quest scoresheet. You now only have to sail more than 50% of the round trip to get full credit, so if we have to motor some, it is no big deal. There are some of you that have never been up the lake as far as Crooked Creek Marina. Pack your warm sleeping bags and come out to join the fleet for probably the last scheduled cruise of the year.
